The Neutral Ground Family Mediation Certification Training is a 52 hour program. The training typically occurs over two consecutive weeks, involving Thursday, Friday and Saturday in each week. Attendance is required at all sessions. The common skills of mediation that are taught are the same in all areas of conflict. This training, however, offers those common skills along with the specifics necessary for divorced/family mediations. Personal knowledge, education and/or experience will be needed to perform other types of mediation.

The training, conducted by John Cameron and Susan Towle, is certified by the Family Mediation Certification Board and covers all specified areas to meet certification standards for Marital Mediators in New Hampshire. Participants attending for certification must have a minimum of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

Areas specifically covered are; information gathering, relationship assessing and preserving, communications, problem solving skills, ethics and confidentiality. Mediation theory, human interaction, conflict management, and family dynamics are also included. Additionally the training will cover relevant New Hampshire and federal divorce and parental rights and responsibilities laws, divorce budgeting and financial planning, and the tax consequences of divorce. The effects of divorce on children are addressed throughout the training. Finally, 8 hours of domestic violence education is included in the training, as well as discussions of alcohol and drug abuse and the impact of all of these on families and the mediation process.

The training consists of lecture and PowerPoint presentations, DVD presentations, along with group discussions, other interactive activities and a major focus on role playing. This is an informal, adult learning environment where participants share and learn from each other as well as the instructors. Morning beverages and light snacks, lunch, and cold beverages during the day are provided.

In order to become eligible for certification this training must be followed with 20 hours of internship with a certified marital mediator (10 hours for family law attorneys). Trainees are provided with a list of certified marital mediators in the state with whom they may find internship opportunities. Every program trainee will also be offered opportunities for mediation internship with John and Susan. John and Susan may also be available to sit in with you if you have a private referral for which you want intern credits. There is not an additional fee for these internship opportunities but there will be an expense fee for participation in a private mediation acquired by the intern.
